On the road in Dresden, the capital of stollen

20. December 2024

ENJOY STOLLEN & EXPERIENCE CRAFTSMANSHIP

Welcome to Dresden, the stollen capital!

Stollen capital – Dresden could undoubtedly bear this name. Anyone visiting the Saxon capital from the end of November to December will certainly notice one thing: Dresden Christmas stollen is not just a taste experience. Whether in cafés and restaurants, art collections and museums, on city tours, or at the venerable Dresden Striezelmarkt Christmas market – everywhere you go, you will encounter the city’s most famous product and its eventful history.

With activities that go far beyond simply enjoying the cake, Dresden’s stollen bakers succeed in bringing craftsmanship and tradition to life and thus preserving them.

These experiences are not to be missed:

  • Dresdner Stollenfest – every year on the Saturday before the second Sunday in Advent
  • Schaubackstube at the Striezelmarkt
  • Christmas bakery at the Striezelmarkt
  • Stollen baking courses with Dresden’s stollen bakers

SCHAUBACKSTUBE AT THE STRIEZELMARKT

These are Dresden's true “old” masters baker

In the midst of the colorful market bustle, between lovingly decorated little houses, visitors to the Striezelmarkt can enjoy Dresden Christmas stollen with all their senses. At the entrance to Germany’s oldest Christmas market, in the Stollenschutzverband’s show bakery, old masters, master bakers, journeymen, and journeywomen stand at the wood-fired oven. Here, visitors can experience how the famous Dresden Christmas pastry is made.

An atmospheric atmosphere of sweet smells and Christmas warmth invites you to linger, look, and taste. The experienced stollen bakers offer visitors a very special pre-Christmas experience and reveal a few stories about Dresden Christmas stollen.

The Schaubackstube at the Dresden Striezelmarkt is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. when the market begins; on December 24, it is open until 2 p.m.

CHRISTMAS BAKERY AT THE STRIEZELMARKT

Ready, set, go!

Little Christmas fans and foodies will get their money’s worth at the Christmas bakery not far from the Kreuzkirche! Throughout the Striezelmarkt season, the hut is a bustling meeting place for cookie enthusiasts and little baking fans, because here children up to the age of 12 can bake cookies together with bakers from Dresden. Whether as a gift for grandma and grandpa or simply to snack on themselves, the sweet creations, most of which are lovingly and artistically decorated, can be taken home.

The Christmas bakery at Dresden’s Striezelmarkt is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. when the market begins; on December 24, it is open until 2 p.m. From Monday to Friday, between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., the bakery is reserved for groups of children from kindergartens and after-school care centers. Those interested can book a cookie-baking session for their group by emailing plaetzchen(at)dresdnerstollen.com.

STOLLEN BAKING COURSES WITH THE DRESDEN STOLLEN BAKERS

Bake your own stollen

Although the ovens are no longer used after October at the latest, the Dresden stollen bakers take plenty of time for stollen fans from here and elsewhere. In special baking courses or bakery tours, they offer a glimpse behind the scenes of this traditional pastry. But be warned! Anyone taking part should have one thing above all else: plenty of strength in their fingers. Because baking stollen is no easy task. Anyone who has tried it themselves will appreciate the special “craftsmanship” all the more. Whether with colleagues or the whole family, in the experience bakeries you will not only learn how many raisins are in a stollen, why they sometimes whisper, and what the pastry has to do with the Christ Child. The bakers themselves tell the great story of stollen and also share small, very personal stories about the Striezel.
